This trailer has 2 12volt batteries wired and fused in parallel. The batteries are a standard el-cheapo flooded lead acid deep cycle type which is standard in many trailers. they do require periodic maintenance and inspection to keep them running at peak efficiency and to extend their life.

Extract the Batteries

The first step is to remove the batteries from service. Before you do anything you should be sure the charger is not running. I just unplug the trailer from all sources of AC power to be sure that nothing is running at all. This step is taken to preclude having a short circuit when trying to remove the batteries.
If you can service your batteries without having to physically removing them from the trailer you are lucky - but still they will need to be disconnected.
I take my batteries fully out of the battery compartment to clean them up and to fully inspect them. You will be looking at a few things so removing them completely is the easiest way to service them for me.

WARNING:

Battery acid is nasty stuff.

Batteries are full of acid, sulfuric acid to be exact. It will burn your skin and will eat through just about anything. If it spills, you can use baking soda to neutralize it. Once neutralized you can rinse the affected area.
The cells on most regular lead/acid batteries are vented to allow the gasses that forms during recharging to escape. These cells are generally capped with a breather cap and under certain conditions the battery acid can leak out from the caps. Care must be taken to not come in contact with anything that leaks from a battery. When in doubt, put some baking soda on any liquid on or around the battery. If it foams up, it is acid that is being neutralized.
Also note that Baking soda, if it gets into the liquid inside the battery will destroy it. So if you use baking soda to neutralize acid on top of the battery, once it has sufficiently done it's job and is no longer foaming up, rinse it away with lots of distilled water.

This is one of the batteries which has been removed from service. Prior to removal all power was removed from the trailer to prevent the charger from causing a short circuit. The battery leads were carefully disconnected, and because I have a dual battery system each lead was taped to prevent it from coming incontact with the chassis. Once the second battery is removed the entire trailer is completely de-energized.
This battery like the other is dirty and has some liquid on top that may be acid so it will have to be neutralized.
