Remove the Cotter pin

To remove the nut that holds the wheel together you must first remove the cotter pin that keeps the nut from turning.

In this picture I have bent the top part of the pin straight. Once the pins are bent straight the pin can be removed. You will not be able to get the pins perfectly straight but mostly straight. Straight enough to remove the pin.
If you move the pin over a little you can stick the head of your needle nose pliers or a small screwdriver through the head of the pin and pull it out.

With the cotter pin removed, use your pliers to further straighten the pins.

Set the cotter pin aside for cleaning.

You can also replace the cotter pin if you have the proper sized replacement available.
